DAY TWO January 23, 2017
Volunteers with a young patient.
This young man’s story has captivated the hearts and minds of the people of Recife. He is only 18 years old. Last year, his family believed they would lose him to acute lymphocytic leukemia. Aggressive chemotherapy eliminated the cancer, but he developed an unfortunate complication of treatment: avascular necrosis of the hip. This is an extremely painful and debilitating condition, leaving this young man in pain with a short leg, only able to walk short distances with crutches. Through local outreach efforts, he heard about Operation Walk Chicago’s work at Dom Helder Hospital in Recife.
He is scheduled for surgery tomorrow!
